Modified Polar Vortex Returns Next Week

After a mild week of 30-degree temperatures, the area plunges back into frigid territory

If you've lived in Chicago, you've heard the adage: "If you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes."

This winter, it might take a little longer.

After a mild week of 30-degree temperatures, the area plunges back into frigid territory beginning next week with a nosedive on the way into a modified Polar Vortex.

Light snow could develop Saturday south of Chicago into northwest Indiana, but the rest of the area should remain in the low 30-degree range with partly sunny skies.

That changes starting Sunday. Highs are only expected to reach the mid-20s by the end of the weekend and low 20s into the teens for the first part of next week.

The Polar Vortex returns later in the week with highs plunging back toward zero and below-zero wind chills. The good news is, temperatures won't be as low as previous Vortex chills thanks to its arrival this late in the season.

Long-range forecasts suggest ice might return next weekend.

As of Friday, 27 days remain until spring officially begins. For Chicagoans, we're counting down the days after a tough, record-breaking winter.
