Teens Charged in Hate Crime Near Millennium Park

Three teens were charged Friday with a hate crime in connection with an incident a day earlier at the South Water Metra Station.

Mack Heard, 17, and Kendrick Towner, 18, both of Richton Park, were each charged with one felony count of hate crime and one misdemeanor count of aggravated assault in a public place.

A third teen, a 14-year-old boy, also received the same charges but was not named by authorities.

The three teens are accused of verbally harassing and threatening a man Thursday night.

"They harassed him and used derogatory remarks; they threatened him," said police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala. "Their comments were in violation of the hate crime statute."

The teens were arrested five blocks away, police said.  The victim was not physically harmed.
