“Second City” O'Brien Heading for SNL

Mainstage member heads for NYC in 2 weeks

A member of Chicago's improv community is leaving the Second City, in both senses of the phrase.

Michael Patrick O'Brien, a current member of The Second City mainstage show, America: All Better, has been drafted by NBC's Saturday Night Live, says the Sun-Times.  He heads to New York city within the next few weeks.

There's no word yet on who will replace O'Brien in the show, but its co-producer Robin Hammond reportedly told The A.V. Club that a decision won't be made until later this month.

O'Brien began taking classes at Second City in the late 1990’s, according to Examiner.com. After completing the Conservatory program, he worked in various reviews off the main and ETC stages. O'Brien then directed the Green touring company during 2004 – 2005.

SNL launches its 35th season with a special Thursday night episode on Sept. 17.
