Metra Suspends Saturday Service on Electric Line, South Shore

Metra riders in the south suburbs will have to wait at least one more day to use the service, as Electric Line and South Shore trains will not run on Saturday.

The trains have not been operational since Wednesday due to multiple factors. The historic cold that gripped the area caused damage to the overhead power lines that provide electricity to the trains, and a freight train derailment Wednesday night caused additional damage to support structures for the power lines, as well as damaging two substations that help generate the electricity.

All other Metra lines are fully operational as of Friday after the cold snap limited service on Wednesday and Thursday.

The damaged power lines and track have also had an impact on Amtrak trains, as the agency has been unable to run northbound trains into the city on the City of New Orleans and Illini trains this week.
