Metra Bans Alcoholic Beverages for Memorial Day Weekend

Alcoholic beverages are generally banned for special events and some holidays

If you’re traveling on Metra trains over Memorial Day weekend, you’ll have to forego any beverages of the alcoholic kind, the agency announced Thursday.

According to a press release, alcoholic beverages will be prohibited on Metra trains beginning on Saturday, and will remain banned through the end of the day Monday.

“Metra has traditionally banned alcohol and glass containers onboard (trains) during major events and festivals,” the agency said. “Passengers will not be permitted to board Metra trains with alcoholic beverages, and any passengers on trains found with alcohol may be removed or arrested.”

While riders won’t be able to bring alcohol on the train, they will get a bit of a discount on their fares. The company will offer its usual weekend fares of $10 on all lines for unlimited Saturday and Sunday travel, and will also allow riders to use the weekend passes for Monday travel as well, according to an agency spokeswoman.

In addition, children 11 and under will be able to ride Metra trains for free from Memorial Day to Labor Day with a fare-paying adult. Up to three children can ride with each fare-paying adult.
