A Chicago woman died Tuesday evening, hours after being hit by a Megabus downtown, Chicago police said.
Donna Halstead, 76, was hit from behind near the intersection of West Adams and South Canal, near Union Station, at around 2:15 p.m.
She was returning home, according to friends and neighbors. Witnesses said they could see her head split open at the scene of the crash. She also suffered scrapes on her shoulder, according to witness David Rodriguez.
"She wouldn't imagine that a bus was gonna turn and rush behind her," Rodriguez said. "She doesn't walk fast. She walks very slow because she had cancer, she had a bad foot."
Her son, who works at Union Station, saw her in the street and joined her when she was taken to Northwestern University Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
"We are saddened to report this tragic incident," Dale Moser, president and COO of Megabus.com said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved, particularly the family of the deceased woman."
The driver of the bus, who has not been named, was cited with failure to yield for a pedestrian at a crosswalk.
This is the second fatal incident in the past week involving a Megabus coach. A Missouri University graduate student died Friday of injuries suffered after a bus struck a concrete overpass support.
