McDonald's Customers Not Necessarily “Lovin' It”

McDonald's and several other large fast food chains rank at the bottom of the pack in scores of quality, service, and value, a new consumer survey shows.

The Oak Brook-based restaurant, along with Burger King, Taco Bell, and KFC were behind smaller chains like In-N-Out Burger and Chick-Fil-A in Consumer Reports' first ever fast food survey, released Thursday.

"Chains like McDonald's and Taco Bell boast supersized value, but consumers don't necessarily think they offer much bang for the buck," said Tom Marks, Senior Project Editor for Consumer Reports. "Fifty four percent of our subscribers cited low prices as a reason for picking a particular fast-food restaurant."

The report also revealed that many restaurants scored higher for service than for food. Chains with the highest scores yield 42 to 54 percent of patrons calling the food excellent. The chains at the bottom of the pack like McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, and KFC yielded no more than 11 percent for excellent ratings.

Chick-Fil-A recently opened their first Chicago location downtown at 30 E. Campus Ave. near Loyola University's Water Tower Campus. Another location was opened in the west suburb of Aurora nearly a year ago.

The survey was based on 36,733 subscribers who made more than 98,000 visits to 53 fast-food chains.

Full results of the story will be available at www.consumerreports.com on June 30th or in the August issue of Consumer Reports magazine.
