Anti-War Activist Subpoenaed

Maureen Murphy says she'd rather go to jail than testify

A Chicago anti-war activist says she'd rather go to jail than testify before a federal grand jury.

Maureen Murphy made the comments Tuesday after she and one other Chicagoan were subpoenaed as part of a federal investigation into terrorism allegations.

She called the subpoena part of a "wider fishing expedition" aimed at silencing the anti-war movement. Murphy is an organizer with the Palestine Solidarity Group.

"We are being targeted for the work we do to end U.S. funding of the Israeli occupation, ending the war in Afghanistan and ending the occupation of Iraq. What is at stake for all of us is our right to dissent and organize to change harmful US foreign policy," she said in a statement posted to AllVoices.com.

More than 20 anti-war activists around the country have been subpoenaed since September, when the FBI raided the homes of several organizers in Chicago and Minneapolis.

Those activists refused to testify, and officials have said they'll be called before the grand jury again. No one has been charged.

Federal officials have said they can't comment on grand jury matters.
