‘The Gun Was 3, 4 Inches From My Head': Masked Robbers Reported on Near West Side

Police are looking for two gunmen wearing a skeleton mask and a surgical mask who robbed a woman Wednesday on the Near West Side. A victim in a similar robbery victim nearby is speaking up to warn others.

Mary McCarthy says after she walked to her car Monday night in West Town — a masked gunman forced open her car door and robbed her.

“He said ‘this is a gun and I will shoot you,’” she remembers her masked assailant saying. “The gun was 3, 4 inches from my head.”

McCarthy told police the gunman stole her phone and wallet. She offered her car keys but he refused.

“I was really scared he was going to do something to me,” she said.

She wishes she would’ve known about the 4 similar robberies nearby — some involving masked gunmen — on the Near West Side just since Sunday.

“If I had known that, I would’ve definitely had my friend follow me all the way to my car,” she said.

Wednesday night neighbors voiced their concerns to police about the recent spike in crime in the area.

Earlier in the day a witness heard gunshots during a robbery in broad daylight near Adams and Ashland.

“I saw a woman run out of the doorway over here coming up saying she had been shot,” Brian Beares said.

Police say the woman was shot at, but not struck.

They’re looking for the two masked gunmen who escaped in a beige vehicle.

“I’m scared for everyone around here," Beares said. "A lot of people are on edge.”
