Dorothy Gaters, who has coached girls basketball at Chicago's Marshall High School for 34 seasons, has earned her 900th career victory.
The West Side's Marshall Commandos defeated North Lawndale 69-35 on Tuesday in the second round of the Windy City playoffs, earning Gaters her landmark win.
Gaters, who has steered Marshall to eight state championships, is the winningest high school basketball coach, boys or girls, in Illinois history, with a 900-127 record. St. Joseph's Gene Pingatore holds the boys record with 829 victories.
Gaters described her 900th win as a monument to all the people she has coached. But she harkens back to her 1982 team as her top coaching memory. It was with that team she earned her first state championship.
