Student Dies After Accidentally Shooting Himself in Head

A student at Marian Catholic High School was found dead in his home after it appears he accidentally shot himself in the head Thursday night.

Blake Hannett, 15, was talking to a friend on FaceTime when the incident allegedly occurred, according to Hannett's friend who was on FaceTime with him when the screen went blank.

Police arrived at the boy's home in the 2700 block of Lake Park Drive in suburban Lynwood after a call of gunfire. When police entered the home, they found Hannett slumped over in a chair by his desk. The weapon, a .38-caliber handgun, was found on the floor underneath the chair, according to police.

The shooting happened a day before Hannett's 16th birthday.

"The Marian Catholic Community grieves the unexpected loss of sophomore student, Blake Hannett, who passed away on Thursday night," school officials said in a statement. "His friendly outgoing personality and sense of humor helped to promote a team spirit both in the classroom and in the band. His million dollar smile and joyful spirit will be missed in the hallways of Marian Catholic but never forgotten. We are deeply saddened by his death."

Counselors were available at Marian Catholic for students throughout the day Friday, according to school officials.
