Emergency Speed Bumps Planned in Area Where Girl Killed in Hit-and-Run

Ald. Toni Foulkes (16th) made a special request for the speed bumps along the 5900 block of South Mozart St. following the death of 5-year-old Maria Gonzalez

City crews were out Tuesday measuring and marking the street for speed bumps in an area where a child was killed in a hit-and-run crash.

Ald. Toni Foulkes (16th) made a special request for the speed bumps along the 5900 block of South Mozart Street following the death of 5-year-old Maria Gonzalez. The girl was hit by a car Saturday afternoon as she ran out to an approaching ice cream truck.

"Normally the procedure is that you get signatures from the block, and then we go from there," said Foulkes. "The speed bumps are the cheapest thing on the city menu and whoever asks for speed bumps,  we give it to them immediately. This is $3,000. This is not worth a life."

The car that struck Gonzalez, which police said was a two-door, dark-colored Honda Civic with a dull or primer finish, equipped with a sunroof and spoiler, continued westbound on 60th Street after striking Gonzalez.

The girl's family members said a wake will be held from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at Marin Funeral Home, at 5744 W. 51st Street. The funeral is Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, at 7201 S. Archer Ave.
