The woman charged in the savage beating of two women in Bucktown was in described in court on Monday as being mentally unstable but "a good person."
Marcy Cruz and Heriberto Viramontes were in court on Monday, the first appearance they've made together since the April 23 attack. They're each charged with two counts of aggravated battery and armed robbery.
In court, Cruz's father said his daughter has a history of mental issues and was not on her medication at the time of the attack.
"She's not all there in her mind," Edwin Cruz told the court, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Another man who says he's the 25-year-old's boyfriend and the father of her two children described Cruz as a "good person."
"She would never get involved with something like this," said Josue Espinosa, according to WBBM-AM 780 radio.
But prosecutors say Cruz was driving the getaway car used that early morning when two women were beat about the head with a wooden baseball bat by a man in pursuit of money and drugs.
She's being held on $1 million bond. Viramontes is being held without bond in the Cook County Jail's Maximum Security Division, separated from other inmates.
Criminal Court Judge Kenneth L. Fletcher ordered DNA swabs be taken from both suspects.
