Man Charged in Weed Wacker Murder Deemed Unfit for Trial

A DuPage County judge deemed Yashesh Desai mentally unfit for trial

A Woodridge man charged with killing his father with a weed wacker was declared unfit to stand trial Friday.

DuPage County Judge Robert Kleeman declared Yashesh Desai not mentally competent to aid in the preparation of his defense after reviewing Desai's psychiatric evaluation, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Desai, 21, was charged with five counts of first-degree murder for reportedly beating Sanjiv Desai, 47, at the Woodridge home they shared on Plover Court in August.

Prosecutors allege Desai struck his father several times with the weed trimmer as he slept on a futon.

Desai was also charged with aggravated battery after he bit a correctional officer at the DuPage County jail, breaking the man's finger.

The evaluation by Dr. John Murray said Desai experienced psychotic episodes and prosecutors are seeking to have Desai sent to the Chester Mental Health Center, a secure downstate facility.

Despite initially refusing to attend Friday's proceedings, Desai came to court with a smile and waved at his mother who was overcome with emotion when she saw her son.
