A 50-year-old man was shot and killed inside a Pace van on Chicago's South Side during what police believe was an attempted robbery early Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The man was talking to the female driver of a Pace van around 3 a.m. in the lot of a gas station in the 8300 block of Stony Island Avenue when another man walked up and forced the victim into the van at gunpoint, police said.
The gunman tried to take the victim's cell phone before firing multiple shots, striking him in the right arm, chest and back, according to authorities.
The victim was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead, police said.
Pace said in a statement that no passengers were on board at the time of the shooting and the employee was not harmed in the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by the shooting that occurred early this morning," the statement read. "At this time, we are focusing our efforts on supporting those involved and assisting law enforcement's investigation in any way we can."
No one was in custody as of Tuesday morning. Area South detectives are investigating.
