A 60-year-old Chicago man knocked on the door of an acquaintance in the north suburbs last week before pummeling him with a pillowcase full with canned goods and stabbing him in the neck with a knife, police say.
Virgil L. Burgs, of the 1200 block of Massasoit Avenue, was charged Thursday with attempted murder and home invasion.
The alleged attack occurred Tuesday about 6:55 p.m. in Evanston at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Noyes Court, according to police. The 53-year-old victim told police he attempted to defend himself from Burgs’s blows when he was stabbed in the neck, left shoulder and hand. Burgs, police said, was saying he was “going to kill the victim for saying negative things about him.”
He then fled form the apartment and was found by police in another unit in the same building where he was taken into custody, authorities said.
Cmdr. Joe Dugan of the Evanston Police Department confirmed Burgs and the victim knew each other.
"Someone told the offender that the victim was talking bad about him, so [the attack] is how the offender responded," Dugan said. "Sad, I mean they aren't kids or something."
It was unclear if Burgs had a lawyer.
