A Chicago man was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Saturday afternoon in the city's West Town neighborhood.

The man was walking in the 400 block of North Aberdeen Street shortly before 5 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle that then fled the scene, police said.

The 33-year-old man was identified as Shane Stokowski, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead just after 5 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Stokowski lived in the 3500 block of West Altgeld and was engaged to be married, according to a close friend of the victim.

He worked as a graphic artist at Emmi Solutions, where coworker Jordan Dolin described him as "perpetually upbeat, incredibly talented and a creative soul."

Police said Sunday they were searching for a black SUV. They believe the vehicle likely has front end damage, but did not have further information.

No one was in custody as the Chicago Police Major Accidents Investigations Unit investigates.
