Man Identified After Fatal Car Plunge Into Lake Michigan

The victim was identified as 52-year-old from Indiana

A man who died after a car plunged into Lake Michigan near Navy Pier last Friday afternoon was identified Sunday, police said.

The victim was identified as 52-year-old Michael J. Budler of Crawfordsville, Indiana, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities said they had removed Budler from the water by 6:30 p.m. and tried to resuscitate him before paramedics transported him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Chicago police department's Marine Unit responded to the incident around 5:30 p.m. after a vehicle entered the water. Rescue boats could be seen in the water just north of the pier, and divers eventually reached the vehicle.

According to officials, poor visibility hampered the search and rescue operation, and rescuers had difficulty breaking the windows on the vehicle during the search.

He appears to have intentionally driven the car into the water, police said.

The cause of the incident is still unknown.
