Man Fatally Shot by Intruder in Home Invasion on Chicago's South Side: Police

One man was fatally shot during a home invasion early Thursday on Chicago's South Side, according to police.

A law enforcement source said the home in the city's Longwood Manor neighborhood belongs to an off-duty police officer, who was not the person shot.

The incident took place at around 3:48 a.m. in the 9700 block of South Harvard Avenue, officials said.

Four males entered the residence through a side window, according to police.

Authorities said the 43-year-old victim who was staying in the home was involved in a physical struggle with one of the offenders, who then shot the man in the chest and back.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality and further details, including his identity, were not available.

No one is in custody in connection with the shooting, according to police, and no other injuries were reported.

An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
