Man Fatally Beat Boy, 1, After Diaper Changing Incident: Police

The man allegedly struck the baby repeatedly after he urinated on him while being changed

A west suburban man charged with murder in connection with the beating death of his girlfriend’s 1-year-old son was ordered held without bail during a Monday court appearance.

Martin Alvarado Jr., 23, allegedly beat Edwin O’Reilly after the baby urinated on him as he was changing his diaper, according to Cicero town spokesman Ray Hanania.

O’Reilly's death at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn last Thursday was ruled a homicide from child abuse, according to a Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office spokesperson.

The boy had been in the care of Alvarado, Jr., his mother’s boyfriend, who lived with them in the 1600 block of 49th Court, Hanania said. The man gave a video-taped confession to police as he was interrogated through the weekend, officials said.

A sibling of O’Reilly was taken into protective custody by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, which has had prior contact with the family, an agency spokeswoman said.

Alvarado Jr. was charged with one count of first-degree murder. His next court appearance was scheduled for April 28.
