Man Charged With Attempted Murder of Officers After Shot Fired at Walgreens

The man was trying to rob a Walgreens in Andersonville when police attempted to arrest him

A man was charged early Sunday morning after he fired shots at police officers outside of a North Side Walgreens when they attempted to arrest him for theft.

Thomas Thompson, 33, is accused of attempting to rob a Walgreens store in 5400 block of North Clark in the Andersonville neighborhood Saturday night at about 8 p.m. Police officers witnessed the theft in progress and attempted to arrest Thompson.

Thompson resisted arrest and a shot was fired at the officers. He was placed in custody soon after, and officers recovered the weapon.

The police officers were transported to area hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the struggle to arrest Thompson, but none of them were hit by the bullet.

Thompson, of the 6000 block of North Ridge Avenue, was charged with two felony counts of attempted first-degree murder, one felony count of disarming a peace officer, one felony count of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor for retail theft.
