Man Charged in Murder of Cab Driver

Tyrese Bell, 23, was charged with first-degree murder for shooting Chinedu Lambert Madu during an attempted robbery

A man has been charged in the shooting death of a Chicago cab driver on Thursday.

Tyrese Bell, 23, was charged with first-degree murder for shooting 51-year-old Chinedu Lambert Madu in the chest during an attempted robbery in the 1200 block of South Albany Avenue, where Bell lived. Bell was a passenger in the cab that Madu was driving.

Madu, an immigrant from Nigeria, worked long hours to support his wife and son in Chicago as well as his parents and siblings in his home country, family members said. After Bell shot him, he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died.

Bell was also charged with three felony counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer.

He is scheduled to appear in Central Bond Court on Sunday.
