Man Charged After Stabbing at Children's Birthday Party

Police say a Chicago man stabbed another man during a fight that broke out at a child’s birthday party in west suburban Riverside last weekend.

Daniel Herrera, 23, faces a felony charge of aggravated battery for the stabbing that happened last Sunday night, according to a statement from Riverside police.

Herrera allegedly was at the family gathering in the 500 block of Byrd Road when he got into an “alcohol-fueled fight” with a 45-year-old Berwyn man.

The older man collapsed unconscious to the ground when Herrera struck him over the head with a beer bottle, police said.

The 45-year-old was then either stabbed in the chest with the broken bottle or he was hurt when he fell into broken glass already on the ground, police said, but “there were definitely stab wounds in the upper chest of the victim.”

Herrera was arrested at his home in the 2700 block of South 55th Street on Thursday, police said.

Another person was arrested on misdemeanor battery charges earlier this week for striking someone who came to the 45-year-old’s defense, police said.

Herrera is scheduled to appear in bond court Saturday.
