Man Arrested After Walking on Harbor Ice

Ghassan Albraidi faces misdemeanor charge of reckless conduct

A downtown resident was arrested Tuesday morning after walking about 300 yards out onto the ice at Monroe Harbor.

Ghassan Albraidi, 20, of the 100 block of North Harbor Drive, was charged with a misdemeanor count of reckless conduct.

The police department's Marine Unit pulled Albraidi to safety about 7:30 a.m. after he walked onto the ice in the harbor, according to police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak.

Albraidi fell several times while walking on the ice, but continued to walk north on the break wall towards the frozen main entrance of the harbor, Kubiak said.

A Chicago Fire Dept. boat intercepted him on the breakwall and he was taken into custody, Kubiak said. Paramedics were at the harbor to evaluate him after he was brought ashore, Kubiak said. Albraidi declined further treatment.

It was not immediately known why he walked onto the ice.
