A 73-year-old man has been identified as the driver who was killed when a vehicle crashed into a suburban middle school earlier this week.
Joseph R. Wasner, of Rolling Meadows, died of multiple injuries sustained from the crash, according to Barrington police.
Police said Wasner's vehicle slammed into a building at the Barrington Middle School-Station campus Monday afternoon. The crash happened while school was still in session but no students or employees were injured.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the cause of the crash, authorities said.
Before his vehicle hit the school, police say Wasner struck a vehicle at Route 14 and Eastern Avenue and fled the scene.
"He then turned into the school parking lot at a high rate of speed before he lost control of his vehicle, crashing into the building," police said in a release.
Autopsy results were not immediately released and an investigation into the crash remained ongoing Wednesday, officials said.
