Maddon's Mother Stranded at Airport by Chicago Plane Fire

For the members of the Chicago Cubs, Friday will represent a momentous day in their careers as they will be involved in the first World Series game played at Wrigley Field in over 70 years.

While most players will have family and friends in attendance for the game, Cubs manager Joe Maddon unfortunately will likely have one extra ticket left unused for the game.

Maddon’s mother Beanie, was planning on flying to Wrigley Field for Game 3 of the World Series on Friday, but an airplane engine fire caused countless delays at O’Hare Airport, leaving Beanie stranded in Pennsylvania.

Beanie, a longtime Hazelton resident, worked for decades at the local Third Base Luncheonette in Maddon's hometown.

Maddon mentioned the news during his pregame press conference before Game 3 on Friday afternoon.

The Cubs manager is currently working in his second World Series as a skipper, but this time he’ll be trying to win after losing in 2008 as the manager of the Tampa Bay Rays. Maddon does have a ring as a coach, having been an assistant when the Los Angeles Angels won the 2002 championship, but he’ll be hoping to win his first title with a manager as the Cubs take on the Cleveland Indians.

Fortunately for his mother, the Cubs are guaranteed to play two more home games after Friday’s tilt, with Game 4 set for Saturday and Game 5 set for Sunday at the Friendly Confines.
