Long, Bushrod Deal With Injuries in Bears' First Padded Practice

The Chicago Bears put on pads for the first time in training camp on Saturday morning in Bourbonnais, but the day didn’t pass without incident as several players dealt with minor injuries and ailments.

The big name on the list was guard Kyle Long, who sat out portions of practice after suffering a shoulder injury during Friday’s workout, according to head coach John Fox. Fox did add that the injury was “nothing serious” during his post-practice press conference.

Long wasn’t the only offensive lineman who was limited in practice, as Jermon Bushrod was held out of the workout by Fox and his staff. Tight end Dante Rosario also missed practice on Saturday due to personal reasons, but Fox said he would return to Bourbonnais on Saturday night and will likely be able to work with the team Sunday.

On the defensive side of the ball, linemen Will Sutton (ankle) and Ego Ferguson (leg cramp) had to come out of the practice for a brief time, but both returned after receiving treatment. Cornerback Kyle Fuller was also limited in the workouts due to an ankle injury, the same ailment that caused him to sit out portions of Friday’s workout.

Despite all of the absences and minor bumps and bruises, Fox was happy with the way things went during the team’s first padded workout of the summer.

“The effort was really good,” he said. “It’s always sloppy the first day because they haven’t done it (through) the whole year. We’ll get a little bit better on the technique as we go.”

The Bears have two more practices before their first scheduled off-day of camp on Tuesday. Their first preseason game is slated for Aug. 13 against the Miami Dolphins.
