A Logan Square woman dealing with the Christmas Day hit-and-run death of her mother expressed frustration Thursday that a man questioned by police had been released.
"They're going to go release somebody that passed an alcohol test and killed a little animal and killed a person. It doesn't seem fair," Lisette Mendoza said.
Mendoza was driving a Volkswagen Golf in the 2600 block of North Pulaski Road early Tuesday when police say a 2000 Chevy Blazer smashed into her. Her mother, 67-year-old Obdula Villalobos, was in the backseat. Villalobos and her little dog were killed.
"Some girls and some guys, they stopped to see if we we were OK. They were like, 'OK, somebody's following him already," recalled Mendoza.
But the 41-year-old man found and questioned Wednesday by police was released Thursday, and officials said their investigation is ongoing.
Villalobos, who had five daughters and nine grandchildren, most of them in Mexico, just retired a year ago, Mendoza said.
She added that despite her loss, she has peace and knows her mother's killer will be found.
"I know God is going to make him think that he needs to do the right thing," she said.
