Area researchers await spring to track Blanding’s turtles

Most Chicagoans are eagerly awaiting spring as temperatures dip back and forth between freezing, below freezing and sub-zero.

But researchers at Chicago's Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum are even more anxious as they wait for the Blanding’s turtles they have been tracking in preserved wetlands to come out from hibernation.

Conservationists note that, because this species serves as a barometer for the health of the local environment, its decline over the last couple of decades indicates a serious problem.
