For the second weekend in a row, construction on the Kennedy Expressway is ahead of schedule.
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Sunday that westbound lanes of the expressway reopened just after 7:30 a.m. All lanes and ramps of the interchange are expected to reopen later in the day Sunday, officials said.
“Motorists should still expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area,” IDOT said in a statement. “Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signing in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, and be on the alert for workers and equipment.”
Entrance ramps to Jackson, Adams, Madison and Randolph, as well as the westbound Congress to westbound Kennedy entrance ramp, were also closed.
Closures were expected to last until 5 a.m. Monday, but removal of the last portion of the Ontario Street Bridge was completed overnight, allowing crews to reopen the mainline Kennedy and the reversible lanes sooner than expected.
Clean-up and traffic constrol is expected to continue throughout the day the Sunday, IDOT said.
Crews will still have to reconstruct the bridge, but that will be accomplished through intermittent night closures through the end of October.
