3 More Carjackings Reported on Chicago's North Side, Hours After Alert

Three more carjackings, all believed to be connected, took place in less than an hour in Chicago's Lincoln Park and Lake View neighborhoods Wednesday night, hours after police issued an alert warning of a rash of vehicle robberies across the city's North Side.

The first took place at around 11:55 p.m. in the 1600 block of West Barry Avenue in Lake View, according to police. A 25-year-old woman told police that she was on the sidewalk when two men approached her, armed with a handgun, and announced a robbery. Authorities said she turned over her property, including the keys to her red Toyota Corolla, which was then stolen.

Less than an hour later, at around 12:37 a.m., a 26-year-old woman was carjacked as she sat inside her parked Ford Fusion in the 800 block of West Willow Street in Lincoln Park, according to police. Authorities said an unknown male offender knocked on the rear door, implied he had a weapon and told her to exit the vehicle. A second offender then pulled her from the car before both men fled the scene in the vehicle.

Officers later saw the first victim's car, the Corolla, driving behind the second victim's car, the Fusion, and engaged in a brief pursuit, according to police. Officers then discovered the Corolla crashed and abandoned in the 400 block of East Marquette Road, officials said.

Investigators also discovered the Fusion parked and unoccupied nearby, close to the intersection of South Anthony Avenue and West 69th Street, according to police.

Both vehicles were process for evidence, officials said, and the two carjackings were believed to be connected to one another as well as a third that took place at roughly the same time.

At around 12:25 a.m., a 20-year-old man was carjacked in the 800 block of West Dickens Avenue as he delivered food, according to police, who said he was approached by two men and one produced a weapon, announcing a robbery. Authorities said the men took iPhone, driver's license and $10 before fleeing in the victim's vehicle.

No one is in custody in connection with any of the carjackings, according to police, and the investigation remained ongoing.

The latest string of carjackings took place just hours after police issued a community alert on six carjackings on Chicago's North Side since Oct. 1. It was not immediately clear if the six incidents listed in the alert were connected to the three that took place Wednesday night into early Thursday.

Those first six carjackings took place as follows:

  • in the 1400 Block of West Sunnyside on Oct. 1 at approx. 10:30 p.m.
  • in the 2900 block of North Paulina on Oct. 3 at approx. 9:45 p.m.
  • in the 3600 block of North Greenview on Oct. 3 at approx. 10:00 p.m.
  • in the 2300 block of West Waveland on Oct. 3 at approx. 11:45 p.m.
  • in the 4200 block of North Hazel on Oct. 8 at approx. 3:00 p.m.
  • in the 2400 block of West Leland on Oct. 9 at approx. 9:15 p.m.

In each incident, a group of between two and five men approached victims inside their vehicles and order them to get out of the car, in some cases pointing guns at the drivers, according to police.

Authorities warned residents to be aware of their surroundings and pay special attention to any suspicious people loitering in the area.

Anyone with information on these incidents was asked to call police at (312) 744-8263.
