Commuters to Feel Impact of Lake Shore Drive Repaving Project

Commuters were expected to feel the impact of a major resurfacing project on Lake Shore Drive beginning Tuesday.

The effort to resurface North Lake Shore Drive from Monroe Street to Grand Avenue, as well as to repair the bridge that carries Lake Shore Drive over LaSalle Drive, was slated to start on Aug. 27, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation, with prep work beginning earlier this month.

Advance work at Lake Shore Drive and LaSalle Drive in on the city's North Side began after Monday morning's rush hour, with all lanes but one closed in each direction on LaSalle Drive under the bridge entrance, officials said.

Traffic backups were expecting both entering and exiting Lake Shore Drive at that intersection, CDOT said - advising the public to take public transportation or alternate routes throughout the duration of the project.

The work is part of the bigger Lake Shore Drive repaving project that was scheduled to be completed by Oct. 6, with crews aiming to finish the job in time for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

During the first phase of the project, CDOT said the two inner lanes of both northbound and southbound Lake Shore Drive would be closed for crews to resurface the roadway and ramps at Randolph Street, Illinois Street and Lower Wacker Drive.

After that portion of the project is completed, the outer lanes were scheduled to be closed for repaving of the left side entrance and exit ramps, officials said.
