Building Collapses in Fire on Chicago's West Side

A building collapsed in a fire on Chicago’s West Side early Monday, authorities said.

Just after 12:30 a.m., firefighters responded to the blaze near the intersection of West Lake Street and North Cicero Avenue in the city’s West Garfield Park neighborhood, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The fire took place at a truck repair business connected to an occupied building, officials said.

Several small explosions could be heard from the truck repair business because of the tires inside, according to CFD, as flames shot high in the sky.

By 1:20 a.m., the building had completely collapsed, officials said.

“This is a very dangerous type of building and the fire was very advanced,” CFD District Chief Dan Cunningham said. “So we were in defensive mode on the original fire building but we had an occupied building to the west, so our concentration was on removing the occupants of that building.”

Around 100 firefighters battled the blaze, including some who were returning from another fire when they spotted the flames and jumped into action.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries after slipping and falling at the scene, was taken to an area hospital and expected to recover.

The building was located near the Cicero station on the CTA Green Line, where service was suspended as firefighters tried to contain the fire.

CTA service resumed just before 3 a.m. and the blaze was struck out around 3:14 a.m., officials said.

No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
