What to Know

  • The fight started after Derek Dietrich shoved Victor Caratini at home plate.
  • Kris Bryant and Starlin Castro were teammates with the 2015 Cubs.
  • Caratini drove in Bryant for the game-winning run.

Bench-clearing brawls are usually intense affairs in baseball, but during Tuesday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins, anger quickly turned into laughter for a pair of former teammates.

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant and Marlins infielder Starlin Castro, who were teammates during the 2015 season in Chicago, met near home plate after an incident involving Victor Caratini and Derek Dietrich. Instead of throwing punches or hurling insults however, they resorted to a good old-fashioned tickle fight:

The “confrontation” occurred during the game when Caratini went to tag Dietrich out at the plate. Instead of just accepting the tag as inevitable, Dietrich appeared to shove Caratini, setting off an argument that resulted in both benches clearing.

No punches were thrown and no players were ejected, and Bryant and Castro ended up laughing off the incident after their tickle battle.

Caratini was the one who ended up with the last laugh, as he drove in the winning run in a 4-3 Cubs victory.
