Komarek Elementary School to Reopen Monday After Flu Outbreak

Komarek was the second area school to close due to the flu outbreak

A North Riverside elementary school that cancelled classes last week due to an increase in flu cases among students is said to reopen on Monday, officials said.

According to a letter to parents from District 94 Superintendent Brian Ganan, Komarek elementary school was professionally disinfected while the building closed last week.

Komarek was the second area school to close due to the flu outbreak.

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, 1500 Sullivan Road in Aurora, closed its campus at 5 p.m. Jan. 22 due to the flu outbreak, according to a statement on the school’s website.

Federal health officials said 16 more children have died from this year’s influenza epidemic—bringing the total up to 53.

Kane County Health Department spokesman Tom Schlueter said the department has not been notified about any other school closings related to the flu, but that there has been a county-wide uptick this year of influenza-like illnesses and confirmed flu cases.
