3 Teens Killed in Kendall County Crash

Driver of overturned tractor trailer won't be cited, officials say

Three suburban teenagers died Monday when the car they were in collided with a tractor trailer near Oswego in Kendall County.

The teens were identified as Brian Herrera and Tyler Montgomery, both 19 years old, and 18-year-old Alexis Banuelos.

Herrera was driving a Ford car near Schlapp Road, about seven miles south of Oswego and seven miles west of Plainfield, shortly after 3 p.m. He turned into the path of the truck, witnesses told NBC Chicago.

The truck, carrying bags of silicon sand, struck the car and overturned, closing Route 126 for several hours. The driver of the truck told police he tried to stop when he saw the car pull out but couldn't.

"It's probably one of the most horrific crashes that I've seen in the 20 years being coroner," said Kendall County Coroner Ken Toftoy.

Herrera and Montgomery were pronounced dead on the scene. Banuelos was pronounced at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, authorities said.

The truck driver was taken to the Aurora hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said he will not be cited in the crash.

Tom Hernandez, a spokesman for Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202, said the district extends its sincere condolences to the families of these three students.

"All of our students are part of the District 202 family, even after they've moved on to life after high school, and so we also grieve this loss," Hernandez said.

Montgomery graduated from Plainfield North High School in 2010, according to a school district spokesman. Banuelos graduated from Plainfield North in 2011 and Herrera attended the school but never graduated.
