A major donation was scheduled to be given to the Chicago Police Department Tuesday in an effort to fight crime.
Billionaire Ken Griffin - Illinois' richest man, according to Forbes - was scheduled to deliver a $10 million grant to help expand initiatives and technology that the city hopes will continue to reduce crime.
The grant will support a collaboration between CPD and the University of Chicago Crime Lab to expand the department's "smart policing strategy," strengthen training and develop an early intervention system as well as resources for officers, including mental health and stress management assistance.
Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson spoke about that support for officers at a CPD graduation ceremony on Monday.
"This system, which is being developed in partnership with our department members and the University of Chicago, will allow us to identify problematic behavior before a potential crisis occurs by providing officers with additional support that is good for them, department and most importantly, community," he said.
Johnson also touched on a decrease in shootings, noting a 67 percent drop in violence in the Englewood neighborhood as compared to 2016 - a reduction he attributed in part to the strategic decision support centers opened in the city's high-crime police districts.
CPD has been working on these initiatives to expand technology and training over the past two years and Griffin's donation will continue that effort.
