Kellen Davis, Bears Raise More Than $50K for Slain Bears Fan's Family

Kellen Davis spent his bye weekend doing good for the others.

The Bears tight end visited with the Tilden High School football team on Thursday, then helped raise $100,000 for the family of slain Bears fan William Pettry on Saturday.

Pettry was in Jacksonville to see the Bears play last weekend. He was stabbed to death at bar close to the stadium before kickoff. The Bears players and coaches were shocked by the news, and moved to help the family. Davis and his marketing manager put together a fundraiser for the Pettry family at John Barleycorn in Wrigleyville on Saturday. With the help of former and current players, Davis raised $100,000 for the Pettry family through the auction and donations.

Autographed items, game tickets and other items fetched high sums. According to the Chicago Tribune, those donated items, checks from Chicago firefighters and bowls fulls of cash donated by the 400 partygoers helped the event raise $50,000. Online donations added  to the memorial fund established for Pettry's wife and three children.

She was touched by the generosity.

"All of these people who don't even know me," Karen Pettry said later. "For all the ugly there is in the world, there is a lot of good."

For Davis, helping the Pettry family was a no-brainer.

"This terrible random act of violence," said Davis. "God put me in a position to help."
