Justin Thomas, Jason Kokrak Share 1st Round Lead at BMW Championship

Tiger Woods fired an opening round 71 Thursday

A large group of players came into the BMW Championship at Medinah needing big performances to advance in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and Justin Thomas and Jason Kokrak were among those that delivered in the first round of the tournament.

The two players currently share the lead at 7-under par after firing 65’s at the iconic course on Thursday. Thomas came into the tournament in the 15th position in the FedEx Cup standings, and he finished strong with three straight birdies on the back nine to put himself at the top of the leaderboard.

A total of five players finished one shot back of the leaders, including Jim Furyk and Brand Snedeker. Eight more players finished with 5-under par 67’s, including Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler, and Tony Finau.

Tiger Woods, whose status for the tournament was in question as he deals with an oblique injury, did tee it up and finish his round Thursday, but he finds himself well off the pace after shooting a 71 in the opening round.

Other notable scores include Phil Mickelson’s 2-under par 70, which was matched by Jordan Spieth. PGA Champion Brooks Koepka shot a 4-under 68, and U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland fired a 70. Open champion Shane Lowry shot an even par 72.
