Chicago Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks will be on the mound for the team as they take on the Washington Nationals in Game 5 of the NLDS on Thursday night, but manager Joe Maddon has another trick up his sleeve as the Cubs face elimination.

According to the skipper, if Hendricks is unable to go far into the game, then it will be an all-hands-on-deck kind of game, and Jose Quintana will be available for the team if he’s needed out of the bullpen.

“Quintana will play the role of Jonny Lester tomorrow if that’s necessary,” Maddon said. “We talked about that pregame, if it was in fact really close, which it was. It will start with Kyle, and Q’s ready to back up like Jonny did tonight.”

Lester came into the game in relief of Jake Arrieta, who was able to last just four innings. Lester made it three and two-thirds innings in Wednesday’s game, but Carl Edwards and Wade Davis couldn’t keep the Nationals at bay as they pulled off a 5-0 victory.

Quintana has not pitched in a relief role since his rookie season in 2012 with the Chicago White Sox. In three relief appearances, Quintana registered a pair of walks, allowed just one hit, and struck out three batters in seven innings of work that season.
