Body of Sailor Killed in Theater Returns to Hometown Crystal Lake

John Larimer's family have arranged a public visitation and a private funeral and burial

The body of a local man who died in last week's midnight movie shooting spree in Aurora, Colo. arrived Thursday in his hometown of Crystal Lake.

Navy Intelligence Officer John Larimer, 27, was killed in the Aurora movie theater while shielding his girlfriend, Julia Vojtsek, from gunfire. The pair were attending the midnight premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises."

Larimer's family began making arrangements for his return to Crystal Lake shortly after a Navy notification team informed them Saturday night that he'd died in the massacre.

"At this point our other son Noel is in Denver working with the Navy and the family here in Illinois to make arrangements to bring John home," Larimer's family said at the time in a press statement. "We respectfully ask that the family and friends of John be allowed time and privacy to grieve for John and we send our thoughts and prayers out to the families of the other victims and those still recovering in the hospital.

A public visitation for the sailor is planned for Friday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Davenport Family Funeral Home, at 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. in Crystal Lake.

The family has arranged for a private funeral and burial.
