Joe Maddon Gives Blunt Answer to Bryce Harper Rumors

Harper is expected to command one of baseball's biggest salaries when he signs

The Chicago Cubs have long been viewed as a team tailor-made for free agent outfielder Bryce Harper, but according to at least one high-profile member of the club’s leadership team, fans shouldn’t hold their breath.

During an event on Tuesday, Cubs manager Joe Maddon was asked by a fan whether the team is going to have a chance to sign Harper, who is one of the most highly-touted free agents of all time. Maddon did not mince words in his response.

“Not going to happen,” the manager said.

Countless reports this offseason have indicated that the Cubs are operating with budgetary constraints that could prevent them from going out and signing a high-profile free agent like Harper, but there have still been reports indicating that the team is at least kicking the tires on bringing him in.

There is of course still plenty of offseason to go through, but at this point, it still seems like a long shot that the Cubs will get in on the Harper sweepstakes in any meaningful way.
