The Chicago Cubs have confirmed that they will interview three candidates within their organization to replace manager Joe Maddon, but another high-profile candidate has seemingly thrown his hat into the ring.

In an interview with 670 the Score’s “Mully and Haugh Show,” former Cubs catcher Joe Girardi expressed interest in the team’s managerial opening.

“Anything that comes across your desk you’re going to be very interested in,” he said. “You start to look at the other (non-playoff team) jobs that are available and obviously I have a lot of ties to Chicago. Any job out there is going to interest me because I would like to manage again.”

Girardi, who grew up in Peoria, played several seasons for the Cubs, and also has plenty of experience as a manager, leading the New York Yankees for 10 seasons. Girardi won 910 games while at the helm of the Yankees, including the 2009 World Series, but left the team after the 2017 season.

Since then he has been doing television work, but with his latest comments, it’s clear he wants to jump back into the managerial ranks.

The Cubs have already announced that three team employees will interview for the position, including bench coach Mark Loretta, first base coach Will Venable, and special assistant to the Baseball Ops department David Ross.
