Judge Orders Fitness Test For Inmate Who Escaped

Jesse Vega escaped July 16 from a corrections vehicle while en route to a court hearing

A Kane County judge has ordered a fitness test for a prisoner who escaped while being transported from a mental health facility outside Chicago.

The judge on Monday ordered 33-year-old Jesse Vega's test for next week, the Daily Herald reported. Vega was jailed in Kane County on $2 million bail: $1 million for the new felony escape charge and $1 million for charges related to the 2013 beating of his girlfriend at Six Flags Great America.

His next court date was scheduled for Aug. 7.

Vega managed to escape July 16 from a transport vehicle as he was being taken from the Elgin Mental Health Center to the Lake County courthouse in Waukegan. He was re-captured about eight hours later after being driven around by an astute cab driver.

"I just knew that he wasn't going to go to the airport, and I knew that sooner or later the cops were around here, so I knew sooner or later they were just going to catch up with him," taxi driver Ken Dunbar said at the time.

Vega faces previous domestic battery charges and the Kane County state's attorney has charged him with one count of escape.

The Illinois Department of Human Services took the lead on the investigation into how Vega was able to escape.
