Charges Filed in Hammer Attack Near Navy Pier

Women were hit in the face with a hammer while walking on lakefront path on Tuesday evening

A Chicago man faces felony charges in connection with an attack on two women near Navy Pier involving a hammer.

Jawaun Westbrook, 28, was charged Thursday with two felony counts of aggravated battery and use of a deadly weapon.

Authorities said Westbrook, of the 400 block of East Ohio Street, walked up to two 55-year-old women along the lakefront path on Tuesday evening, demanded their purses, and then hit them both in the face with a hammer before running off.

"She had blood running all down the front of her face. It was something that looked out of a horror movie," said Tya Lichtie, who witnessed the aftermath of the attack.

The women were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
