Jane Byrne Plaza to Debut This Spring: Report

City's first female mayor lived across the street from the old Chicago Water Tower

Former Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne will have a new site dedicated to her sometime this spring, according to a published report.

The Chicago City Council last summer approved plans to rename the plaza next to the old Chicago Water Tower in her honor. As mayor, Byrne lived across the street, and the tower often was a symbol of hope and inspiration for her.

Now the flowers have been ordered and plans are underway for a spring ceremony, the Chicago Sun-Times' Michael Sneed reported Wednesday night, citing a mayoral spokeswoman.

Byrne passed away last November, a little more than a month after attending a ceremony that renamed the Circle Interchange after her.
