Wrong-Way Driver Travels Through I-94 Pileup Closure

Incident was broadcast in a live television report

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 near Michigan City, Ind., remained closed early Friday morning following a deadly, massive pileup a day earlier.

But one driver somehow made it through the road closure, was followed by authorities and was pulled over as crews continued to their efforts to clear the wreckage.

"He's not going far at all. These lanes are shut down. So it looks like state police are going to have quite a conversation with this driver here," reporter Michelle Relerford said during a live report on the NBC 5 NEWS TODAY. "I'm not exactly sure how they made it through or couldn't tell that these lanes were shut down."

Immediately after being pulled over, two officers were seen speaking with the motorist. That driver was then put in handcuffs as the officers searched the vehicle.

As of 5:30 a.m. Friday, three people and a dog were confirmed dead and more than 20 people were injured in the chain-reaction pileup at mile marker 36 in LaPorte County. More than a dozen tractor-trailers and several passenger vehicles were involved, police said.
