Commuters in Northwest and North Central Indiana trying to make their way to the Michigan state line had a rough go of it Thursday morning.
Indiana State Police reported numerous slide-offs and spin-outs along Interstate 94 and Interstate 80 -- the Indiana Toll Road -- because of lake-effect snow bands.
At one point, a serious crash closed eastbound I-94 at Union Pier in New Buffalo, Michigan.
While the Chicago area saw light flurries, the northern parts of Indiana were hit by Winter Storm Watches and Warnings.
National Weather Service forecasters issued a Winter Weather Advisory through 7 p.m. ET for several Northern Indiana counties. Quick accumulations of 1 to 2 inches of snow were expected on bridges and overpasses.
Police say dozens of collisions and slide-offs occurred Thursday morning in the South Bend area, with the U.S. 31 bypass and the Indiana Toll Road reported as slick and hazardous. A school bus reportedly slid off U.S. 20 near the town of New Carlisle, but no injuries were immediately reported.
The Fort Wayne area saw a dusting of overnight snow, which contributed to several crashes on Interstates 69 and 469.
