Illinois Tollway Considers Shaming Scofflaws Online

300 million in tolls, fines remain unpaid since 2001, officials say

Motorists with more than $1,000 in Illinois Tollway fines may soon have an extra incentive to pay up.

The Tollway is considering posting the names of those scofflaws and the amount that they owe on its web site.

"Ninety-eight percent of the people who use our system pay on time and pay their fair share, and it's really a small percentage, but those numbers can add up quickly when people aren't paying for years and years and years," said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur.

The online shaming could go into effect by the end of the week after Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation allowing the Tollway to move forward with the practice.

The Tollway said $300 million in tolls and fines remain unpaid since 2001.
