Theater Owner Charged With Tax Evasion

Authorities say Edward Bulthaup III underreported sales by a total of $18 million at two theaters between 2009 and 2013

Authorities on Wednesday charged an Illinois theater owner who they say owes the state at least $1.3 million in taxes.

Illinois Department of Revenue officials said 57-year-old Edward Bulthaup III of Woodridge was arrested on more than 100 counts of felony tax evasion, fraud and failure to file tax returns at the Hollywood Palms movie theater in Naperville and Hollywood Boulevard theater in Woodridge.

Bulthaup owned and operated the Hollywood Boulevard theater until Feb. 10 of this year.

Authorities say Bulthaup underreported sales by a total of $18 million at the two theaters between 2009 and 2013.

Bulthaup appeared at a bond hearing Wednesday afternoon by video feed from DuPage County jail, The Daily Herald reported.

He said he has never committed fraud.

A judge set his bail at $250,000.
